How To Download A Film

Downloading files over the Internet has become very common and increasingly it is the way music, films, photographs, documents, audio books, apps and software are purchased.

Typically you connect to the Internet, go to a website, choose what you want to download, press a 'download' button and the files are transferred, often to a specific area of your computer (usually specified in the preferences of your browser) or to a Library, File or Drive that you specify.

The speed of the process is a combination of the file size and your Internet speed. Music files are relatively small and can be transferred within seconds, whilst a film can be a very large file and take several hours to download even with relatively fast Internet connections. See the chart below.

Length and type of media Approximate size Approximate download speed
Broadband
5 Mbit/s 1 Mbit/s
4 minute song 4 MB 5 seconds 25 seconds
15 minute SD fiilm 200 MB 3 - 5 minutes 15 - 20 minutes
20 minute HD film 600 MB 10 - 15 minutes 45 - 60 minutes
1 hour SD film 1 - 1.5 GB 20 - 30 minutes 1.5 - 2 hours
1 hour HD film 1.5 - 2 GB 30 - 40 minutes 2 - 3 hours

To help speed up the process of downloading SteepEdge films, we recommend that you have a broadband Internet connection.

At SteepEdge, we specially format and compress the files using a H264 process into a QuickTime movie file that gives excellent quality for relatively small file sizes. This enables HD quality films to be downloaded in under an hour with 5 Mbit/s Internet speed.

In many cases, as part of the download acquisition, you will purchase the file by going through an online purchase process before you are allowed to download the file. This is the case with SteepEdge.

If you are new to SteepEdge, the first step is to register and become a member. Once you create your user name and password, you are set up to purchase and download films. This also enables you to look at previews of the content, choose a film to download and then go through the secure purchase process (using either PayPal or SagePay). After successfully purchasing the film, a confirmation will appear on the screen containing a link to the SteepEdge 'My Film Library' section so you can access the purchase. When you click on this, the download starts and the film file is transferred to your computer. An email will also be sent as a receipt of purchase.

The download link will be removed after the successful download or after the specified time period and number of attempts has elapsed. However, a link to stream the purchased film will remain in your library as long as you remain a SteepEdge member.

If your computer is switched off for any reason, the download will stop. It will not pause, and on re-starting the download will start at the beginning again. Depending on the computer and browser, the download may start automatically or it may need to be started manually by going to 'My Film Library'. Be aware that some computers abort downloads when they go to sleep and / or shut down as part of their power saving settings. This can normally be adjusted in computer preferences. Closing your browser will also stop downloading, so keep it running in the background.

Please note that to access 'My Film Library' you will have to log in to the site using your user name and password.
